Abstract

This study aims to explore high school students’ experiences using HelloTalk as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tool to support listening comprehension skills. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used, involving 7 high school students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis. The results revealed three main themes: (1) how students utilized HelloTalk’s features for listening practice, (2) students’ experiences and perceptions regarding the use of HelloTalk, and (3) challenges and strategies for overcoming them. The findings indicate that HelloTalk provides authentic exposure to spoken English, boosts motivation, and builds students’ confidence, although technical and affective barriers still exist. This study offers pedagogical implications for teachers and curriculum developers in contextually integrating MALL at the high school level.
